The famed characteristics of cashmere wool are all thanks to the cashmere goats, or rather, thanks to their original habitat in the Himalayas, the so-called ‘roof of the world’, where it is of vital importance for them to have a good protective coat.

Luxures

Wool can only bear the title of ‘cashmere’ if it meets a number of requirements. Cashmere wool is scarce, because only the fine, downy hairs on the animals’ chins, throats and bellies suffice. The part of their coat is soft delicate and light-weight. It is wonderfully warm, being both isolating and breathable. Moreover, a cashmere plaid never leaves you feeling stuffy, because the fabric itself is moisture-absorbent. A cashmere goat will be combed or shorn only once a year. This is often still done by hand, followed by carefully de-hairing the wool. This process yields around 130 to 300 grams of cashmere wool per goat.

Easy to maintain

Cashmere wool always retains a measure of wool wax known as lanolin. This lanoline is dirt-repellent and keeps bacteria out. As such, cashmere requires next to no maintenance. All you need to do is to keep your plaid nice and fresh, air it out every once in a while. If it gets strained by any chance, you can wash it as well.
